Westhampton Beach Village Police: Fired Shots, No Arrests Made

Editor's Note: The following information was supplied by the Westhampton Beach Village Police Department. A criminal charge is only an accusation and does not indicate guilt.

Westhampton Beach Village Police reports for the week of August 23 through August 30:

Shots Fired

Westhampton Beach Village Police investigated a call regarding shots fired on Redfield Lane as Hurricane Irene petered out late Sunday night. But, officers found no evidence of a discharged rifle or shotgun.

Village police were near Redfield Lane at around 5:52 p.m. Sunday dealing with downed wires and trees from Irene when some officers heard what sounded like two rounds shot out of a gun, police said. Then, a Redfield Lane resident came charging down the street, screaming that his neighbor had fired a gun.

Police ordered the man’s family to lay on the ground, as protection from further gun shots. They cuffed the man’s neighbors, who he had accused of firing the gun. Police also cuffed those laying on the ground, as each family accused the other of having a gun.

Police discovered that the man who came running down Redfield Lane had a long gun – either a rifle or shotgun – but had only brought it out after he heard the fired shots.

Suffolk County’s canine unit did not sniff out any ammunition debris, police said. There were no injuries.

Police said both families have been actively fighting.

Warrant Arrest

A 36-year-old man from the Bronx was arrested by Westhampton Beach Village Police on a warrant for grand larceny after nine months of investigation and work.

Robert Kabakoff was arrested August 24 at 12:14 p.m. at village police headquarters on a warrant for fourth-degree grand larceny, a felony. He was originally charged December 4, 2010.

Kabakoff had leased a 2007 Audi from now-bankrupt Manhattan Motorcar of the Hamptons, formerly located on Old Riverhead Road in Westhampton Beach. But, Kabakoff had never made payments on the car, causing Manhattan Motorcars of the Hamptons to fall into arrears. The company tried to repossess the car, but had no luck and had to resort to police action.

Kabakoff will appear in village court September 21, police said.
