District Releases Statement on Teacher Case

Westhampton Beach superintendent assures parents that "the safety and well-being of students is our top priority," though unable to offer details at this time.

After a gym teacher was charged with unlawful surveillance, a felony, for allegedly hiding a video camera in the girls locker room, Westhampton Beach school officials released a statement on Wednesday noting that it is "legally constrained from sharing any additional details at this time."

The allegations of teacher miscoduct were made public on March 5 when Mike Radday, school superintendent, called Westhampton Beach police to report the incident that occured in the girl's locker room.

Radday released the following statement Wednesday:

The District has been informed by the New York State Police of the arrest of a Middle School teacher. The individual has been suspended until further notice pending the outcome of the legal process. Since this is a personnel matter and an active investigation, the District is legally constrained from sharing any additional details at this time. Please be assured that the safety and well-being of students is our top priority, and the District will continue to cooperate with law enforcement officials curing their investigation.

The employee, 27-year-old Thomas Sheppard of Speonk, is scheduled for arraignement on Wednesday, and State Police are scheduling a 2:30 press conference.
