Westhampton Beach Police Log: Country Club Guests Report Theft

Police say incidents of theft from cars increase in summer.

Two cars parked at the on Potunk Lane were broken into overnight Saturday, according to Westhampton Beach Village Police.

A 38-year-old man from Hicksville told Westhampton Beach Village Police that sometime before 1 a.m. someone stole a GPS and $300 from his car, which was parked in the southeast corner of the parking lot. The man told police that he had other, more valuable items, like a camera, in the car that were not stolen.

A New York State driver’s license, money, an iPhone and credit cards were stolen from a West Babylon man’s car parked in the same lot, police said. The 29-year-old man said that it happened sometime after 8 p.m. and before 1 a.m. Westhampton Beach Village Police Lieutenant Trevor Gonce said officers are investigating both incidents.

Because village population increases in the summer, incidents like theft and larceny are more likely to occur, Gonce said. He recommends visitors and residents lock their cars and place any valuable items either under seats or in the trunk -- out of sight to those passing by.
