Westhampton Beach Police Log: Apple Laptops Stolen

School district says their computers do not feature GPS tracking devices.

Westhampton Beach Village Police reports from September 13 through September 20:

Grand Larceny

A 53-year-old Westhampton man told Village Police last Thursday, September 15 that his two daughters’ Apple laptops were stolen in April.

The man, who lives on Columbia Avenue, did not provide information on where the laptops were stolen from or where his daughters last saw them. The replacement cost for each laptop is $1,100, police said.

Westhampton Beach Village Police have the computers’ serial numbers, so they will investigate. Police said the school district’s Apple computers do not feature GPS tracking devices, making hunting down the laptops more difficult.

School Board President Jim Hulme said that the Lenovo laptops the district formerly provided students with had tracking devices. When the district switched to Apples two years ago, the board did not seek out GPS trackers because the students seemed to enjoy the computers more and took pride in owning them, Hulme said. Reports of lost computers and thefts were not an issue at the time, he said.

“If it started to be a serious issue, which I’m not sure how we would define, we would talk about it and put things in place,” Hulme said.

The 53-year-old man did not provide any explanation on why he reported the incident five months after the theft, police said.
