An Acura RSX unexpectedly caught fire while a man was driving on Route 24 southbound in Hampton Bays Monday night, shortly after 8 p.m.
No injuries were reported in the incident, which shut down the right-turn lane leading from Route 24 south to Montauk Highway westbound.
According to the driver, he and a passenger were driving when they noticed smoke coming from underneath the hood. He pulled over after turning from Route 24/Flanders Road onto Montauk Highway and popped the hood, to find something under the hood had caught aflame.
The man said he didn't know why the car had caught fire. Southampton Town police were on the scene as a Rapid Recovery wrecker removed the vehicle.
