Town Police Log: Hampton Bays Man Charged with Assaulting a Police Officer

Multiple drunk driving arrests this week.

Assault of a Police Officer

Robert Smith, 50, of Hampton Bays, was arrested Sunday at around 6:18 p.m. and charged with assault in the second degree, a felony; resisting arrest, a misdemeanor; and harassment in the second degree, a violation. Police said Smith was being interviewed about a domestic incident when he struck an officer in the face with his elbow and then resisted arrest. He also assaulted a second officer, police said. He was subdued with the efforts of three officers, police said.

DWI

Jennifer L. Hargett, 33, of Hampton Bays, was arrested in Hampton Bays Friday at around 4:28 p.m. and charged with DWI, a misdemeanor, and leaving the scene of an accident, a violation. Police said Hargett was involved in a motor vehicle accident in the parking lot of King Kullen in Hampton Bays and left the scene. She was apprehended minutes later on Tulip Avenue and found to be intoxicated, police said.

Matthew R. McClain, 29, of Hampton Bays, was arrested Friday in East Quogue at around 8:42 p.m. and charged with DWI. Police said McClain was stopped on Montauk Highway at the Old Country Road intersection for a traffic infraction and was found to be intoxicated.

Kevin  D. Scopnich, 24, of Hampton Bays, was arrested Saturday at around 1:40 a.m. in Hampton Bays and charged with DWI and moving from a lane unsafely, a traffic infraction. Police said Scopnich was driving eastbound on Montauk Highway when he started swearving. When he was pulled over, his eyes were bloodshot and glassy and he smelled strongly of alcohol, police said. He performed poorly on several field sobriety tests and failed a pre-screening breath device test, police said.

James A. Zeiser, 44, of Hampton Bays, was arrested Friday at around 11:41 p.m. in Hampton Bays and charged with DWI, a misdemeanor and speeding and driving an unregistered motor vehicle, both violations. Police said he was speeding on Flanders Road near the Old Riverhead Road intersection and when he was pulled over, his breath smelled of alcohol. He was also unsteady on his feet and had bloodshot, glassy eyes, police said. He performed poorly on standard field sobriety tests and had a blood alcohol content of 0.11 percent on a pre-screen breath test, police said.
