Town Police: Two Charged With Leaving the Scene of an Accident

The following information was supplied by the Southampton Town Police Department. A criminal charge is only an accusation and does not indicate guilt.

Aggravated DWI

Douglas Schmieder, 52, of Hampton Bays, was arrested Dec. 1 at 1:56 p.m. at the corner of Maple and Oak Streets in Westhampton and charged with aggravated DWI, a misdemeanor. Schmieder was stopped for driving out of lane, according to his arrest report.

Leaving the Scene of an Accident

John Reha, 32, of Deer Park, was arrested Nov. 30 at 4:57 p.m. at the corner of Sunrise Highway and Flanders Road in Hampton Bays and charged with leaving the scene of an accident with property damages and third-degree unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, both misdemeanors. He was also charged with unlicensed operation and unsafe tire, both violations. Police said Reha was in an accident with physical injuries, and left the scene. Officers later identified Reha’s car, a 1997 Mercedes, and apprehended him, according to his arrest report.

Jose Rivera, 31, of Hampton Bays, was arrested Nov. 23 at 3:03 p.m. at police headquarters in Hampton Bays and charged with leaving the scene of an accident with personal injuries, a misdemeanor, and unlicensed operator, a violation. Police say Rivera was in an accident on Springville Road on Nov. 13 and then ran away before police arrived. Officers used a K9 team to locate Rivera at the time of the accident, but could not find him. He was later tracked down through an investigation, according to his arrest report.
