Top Fire Stories in Westhampton-Hampton Bays in 2013

Stories about fires that happened in and around Westhampton and Hampton Bays this past year.

Over the past year, volunteer firefighters from across the area responded to numerous alarms. The following is a round-up of several fires that they responded to. 

Fire Marshal: Two injured in Westhampton House Fire


A house fire that broke out in August in Westhampton sent two to the hospital, according to the Southampton Fire Marshal's office.

The fire, Fire Marshal John Rankin, said started in a home at 7 Lincoln Street at about 9:30 p.m. and when the Westhampton Beach Fire Department arrived, Westhampton Beach Fire Department Chip Bancroft  said flames were coming out the back, front and sides of the home. 

Series of Dumpster Fires Spark Investigation

In January, Southampton and Riverhead Fire Marshals started investigating a series of Dumpster fires that were reported.

Firefighters from across the area were at the scene of a total of 10 dumpster fires; 5 in Riverhead, 3 in Hampton Bays and 2 in Westhampton Beach.

Hampton Bays Firefighters Extinguish SUV Fire

Hampton Bays Fire Department was called shortly after noon on a March monday morning to a Harbor Road driveway, where a small SUV had caught fire.

The fire was extinguished, but the front end of the SUV was destroyed.

No injuries in Early Morning Blaze

Westhampton Beach firefighters extinguished an early morning blaze on in June at a house under renovation at 13 Tanners Neck Lane.

The department was called to the scene at 6 a.m. to find the house partially in flames, but firefighters were able to knock the fire down quickly with the help of neighboring departments, including Quogue and Eastport. 
The house was unoccupied at the time.

Vehicle Goes Up in Flames on Sunrise HighwayOn Nov. 13, firefighters found fully engulfed car on Sunrise Highway, just east of the Shinnecock Canal.

Hampton Bays Fire Diverts E. Montauk Highway Traffic

On March 15, Traffic on East Montauk Highway in Hampton Bays was diverted for more than a half hour as firefighters responded to a house fire.

The fire was reported shortly before 9 p.m. at 204 E. Montauk Highway, and as fire trucks and police vehicles filled the road, fire police sent to Gravel Hill Road, Old Riverhead Road, and other cross streets.

Fire Department Puts Out Flames at Dune DeckTwo rooms at the Dune Deck on Dune Road went up in flames in June. according to Westhampton Beach Fire Department Chief John “Chip” Bancroft.

Bancroft said his department was called to the scene at about 3:00 p.m and on arrival, they found two rooms in a structure near the motel's pool on fire.
