Southampton Town Police Officer Injured In Crash

Police said collision was an accident, no charges or summonses issued.

A Town of Southampton Police officer was injured when his police cruiser collided with another vehicle while he was en route to a call in Hampton Bays on Friday night.

According to police, the officer, whose name was not disclosed, was heading south on Ponquogue Avenue to answer an active dispute call when another vehicle attempted to make a left turn. The driver pulled out in front of the police cruiser and the two crashed, injuring both of them.

Town of Southampton Police Sergeant Sue Ralph said the officer and the other driver were treated at an area hospital for non-life-threatening injuries. Sgt. Ralph said the officer is now home recovering. No summonses or charges were filed against the other driver in the incident.

The impact caused severe damage to the police cruiser's front passenger side and driver side door. It was towed to the yard at Town of Southampton Police Headquarters and totaled. Sgt. Ralph said in cases where a vehicle is decomissioned it is stripped for parts as needed for active vehicles in the fleet.
