Southampton Police: Car Break-Ins on the Rise

Officers urge residents to safeguard their vehicles at night.

With a rash of recent vehicle break-ins, are urging residents to lock their cars, roll up windows, set car alarms and remove all valuable items.

"Items such as pocketbooks, cell phones, laptops, and electronics make an easy target and provide opportunity to those looking for it," Sgt. Lisa Costa wrote in a release to the media.

Over the past few weeks, police say there has been a number of larcenies reported. Last week, a 45-year-old man from Hampton Bays told town police that someone slashed the convertible top of his 2012 Ford Cobra Mustang, parked on Daniel Road, with a sharp tool. An Apple Laptop and men’s leather jacket were  taken from the car. On Oct. 17, a Hampton Bays woman told police that someone broke the side windows of her Honda Accord and stole her iPad and charger. The car was parked in the driveway of her home on Old Riverhead Road.
