Southampton Accident Backs Up Rush Hour Traffic

Commuters had to take detours on Monday morning after a Hampton Jitney and garbage truck collided on County Road 39A.

Commuters had another rough morning heading east for work.

A Hampton Jitney and a National Waste Services garbage truck collided in front of the jitney headquarters on County Road 39A in Southampton on Monday morning, at around 4:40 a.m., shutting down part of the main thoroughfare.

The road was closed between Majors Path and David White's Lane for four and a half hours, backing up the traffic during the busy rush hour, particularly commuter traffic heading east, while traffic was diverted in both directions as Southampton Town police investigated.

Last Thursday morning, a fatal accident involving a Hampton Jitney, further west, near St. Andrew's Road, shut down traffic heading east and west during morning rush hour. A 29-year-old Shirley woman died when her SUV struck a Jitney head on. Traffic jams were reported all over the East End, and some motorists tried to go through the North Fork and Shelter Island to get to the South Fork.
