Route 111 Reopens After Fatal Crash

Suffolk police investigate Eastport accident.

A woman was pronounced dead at the scene in Eastport after her vehicle flipped over on Route 111 Thursday morning, according to Suffolk County police.

A police spokeswoman said the woman's vehicle flipped over when it hit the median, just north of County Road 51. She was traveling southbound.

Police are withholding the victim's identity pending notification of the family.

The accident was reported at 7:46 a.m. and Route 111 was partially closed while the scene was investigated. The road reopened at 11:20 a.m.

Suffolk County Police Department detectives are investigating a "serious crash" in the Manorville, Eastport area Thursday morning, according to a spokeswoman, and a major traffic artery is partially closed due to the investigation.

The accident was reported at 7:46 a.m. on Route 111 near the intersection with Topping Path, the spokeswoman said, though 111 northbound is closed at Sunrise Highway/Route 27 and in the southbound direction just one lane is open. Westbound motorists on Sunrise Highway wishing to take exit 62 will have to find an alternate route for the time being.

The area of the accident borders Eastport and Manorville.

Route 111, also known an Captain Daniel Roe Highway, is a road many coming from New York City take to reach Westhampton and points east.
