According to Chief David Dolphin with the United States Coast Guard, a call reporting a boat on fire just north of Cormorant Point, in Shinnecock Bay, came in at 8:50 a.m.

Dolphin said the man operating the boat reported soon after that while the boat was taking on some water, no fire was taking place and the boat was not in distress.
