Westhampton Basement Fire Yields No Injuries

Westhampton Beach Fire Department responded to a house fire on Tuesday afternoon.

The quickly extinguished a basement fire, which resulted in no injuries, at the old Air Force base housing complex just before 5 p.m. on Tuesday.

According to Chip Bancroft, Westhampton Beach Fire chief, the fire department arrived at 731 Cooke St. to find the house under heavy smoke.

Bancroft, who lives just down the road from where the fire occurred, said firefighters banged on the door. Finding that there was no one in the home, they entered the house.

Bancroft said firefighters found a small fire in the basement and that firefighters managed to put out the fire.

"It was a good knock-down," said Bancroft. "The guys did a really good job. There was limited damage."

Also on the scene was the Eastport Fire Department Rapid Intervention Team and the covered the Westhampton Beach fire house.

The fire is being investigated by the Southampton Town Fire Marshal's Office.
