Riverside Diner Gas Leak; Three Charged In Burglary

Natural gas was emanating from the old Riverboat Diner.

The strong smell of gas led to three arrests in Riverside on Saturday.

According to Southampton Town Police, on Saturday, at approximately 6:38 p.m., officers responded to a report of a commercial burglary that had allegedly just occurred at the former Riverboat Diner in Riverside.

A strong smell of natural gas had also been detected emanating from the building, police say.

Upon arrival, Southampton Town police said they apprehended two "suspicious" male subjects who were observed allegedly leaving the building carrying scrap metal and pipes.

Police arrested Riverhead resident Angel Anibal Camey Uyu, 24, and charged him with burglary in the third degree, a class D felony. He was remanded to county jail in lieu of $500 bail.

Also arrested was Riverhead resident Victor Manuel Sicajau Tepeu, 39; he was also charged with burglary in the third degree, a class D felony, and remanded to county jail.

In addition, Southampton Town police arrested Riverhead resident Augustin Cosajai, 40, and charged him with criminal trespass in the third degree, a class B misdemeanor; he was remanded to county jail in lieu of $200 bail.

All three were held overnight and brought to Southampton Town Justice Court for arraignment the next morning.

Responding to the smell of gas were the Riverhead Fire Department, Southampton Town fire marshals and National Grid representatives; a broken gas line within the building was shut down.
