Report: Police Record Keeping Has 'Major Shortcomings'

An accounting firm finds flaws in the Southampton Town Police Department's recording of officers' sick and vacation days, Newsday reports.

Employees of the Southampton Town Police Department were allowed to manage the own hours and time off without oversight, according to a Newsday report based on an accounting firm's review of the department's procedures.

There are no rules in place to track balances used to calculate payouts to employees when they retire, the report states.

Len Marchese, the town comptroller, said during a Town Board work session last week that the calculation of payments to retiring police officers has come into question.

Don Hoffman, a CPA and a partner in the accounting firm, Cullen & Danowski, LLP, told the Town Board that he would like to see a more formal process for termination payments.

However, Hoffman said that discrepancies uncovered to date were not significant, according to Newsday.
