Rash of Stolen Property in Riverside/Flanders

Police warn residents not to leave valuables in their cars.

Residents in Riverside and Flanders have been warned by police to watch out for their valuables as a rash of stolen property reports have unfolded in recent days.

Southampton Town police said on Sunday at 8 am., a resident reported that while her car was parked in front of her residence on Flanders Road in Riverside, an unknown subject stole her pocketbook from her unlocked car.

The thief made off with $800 in cash, a debit card, and other personal items, police said; he was caught on the homeowner’s video surveillance camera.  

Detectives identified the thief as Roshawn Childress, 32; Childress is homeless. Several hours later at 3 p.m., detectives located Childress on Main Street in Riverhead where he fought with them in order to avoid being arrested, police said.

He was subsequently arrested and charged with grand larceny in the fourth degree, a felony, and resisting arrest, a misdemeanor.

Childress was held overnight and brought to Southampton justice court the next morning; he was remanded to the Suffolk County Correctional Facility.

Earlier this week, Patch reported that Southampton police said more charges will "absolutely" be forthcoming for a Riverhead High School student who they say admitted to breaking into several cars in the Flanders area recently before throwing a party at a vacant home in the area.

The Huntington Lane homeowner reported Friday that somone had entered his house, had a party, consumed his alcohol, and stolen a telescope and other assorted items.

Hasarafally was arrested last Saturday after police found a backpack at the Huntington Lane home, they said, leading them his way. Cops had originally been tipped off on a party at the house after a neighbor, aware the home was supposed to be out of use, had more than a few strange visitors. Police said Hasarafally had even advertised the party on Facebook.

While invesigating, police said a passel of young people arrived, looking for the party.

Following the incident, Hasarafally was originally charged with second-degree burglary, a felony. He was additionally charged for entering another residence on Peconic Trail in Flanders on Friday while in possession of some of the stolen property from the residence on Huntington Lane and was charged with criminal trespass in the second degree, and criminal possession of stolen property in the fifth degree, both misdemeanors.

Detectives were able to recover the stolen telescope.

Det. Sgt. Lisa Costa said on Wednesday that Hasarfally admitted to breaking into the cars. Police reports stated that at least five cars in the area, between May 29 and 31, were reported to have been broken into. 

Victims said car insurance cards and car registrations, an iPod, and even a Hotel Transylvania DVD were stolen from the lot.

On Friday, police said detectives have recovered some of the stolen items and asked that anyone in the community who believes they may have been a victim call the detective division directly at 631-702-2230.   

Southampton Town police urged residents to take safety precautions to deter such crimes by removing all personal items of value from their cars, closing all windows, and locking their vehicles.
