Southampton Police Field More than 20 Car Break-in Reports

Hampton Bays, Shinnecock Hills and North Sea areas targeted.

officers have recorded more than 20 about smashed car windows, slashed convertible tops and rummaged-through center consoles over the last two weeks, according to documents.

The break-ins were concentrated in Shinnecock Hills, Hampton Bays and East Quogue – though a few were reported on Cooper Lane and Lake Side Drive in North Sea, according to police reports. The break-ins are mainly classified as criminal mischief and larceny.

Kyle Road and nearby Duvall Drive were targeted Oct. 19 through Saturday, according to police. In the overnight between Thursday, Oct. 20 and Friday, two cars on Kyle Road were broken into, and the owners reported their credit cards, debit cards and checks missing from them. A 24-year-old woman from Duvall Drive made a similar report during the same time period.

A 49-year-old man told Town Police that someone in the overnight between Oct. 16 and Oct. 17 broke a window in his car, parked on Inlet View Drive in Shinnecock Hills, and stole an American Express gift card, $150 camera, checks and a Visa card. Police had another report about a broken car window on the same street during the same time period.

On Ocean View Road between Oct. 16 and Oct. 17, a 60-year-old man reported that windows in two different cars of his were broken and that a $2,000 Macbook was missing from one of them. An iPod and four harmonicas were reported stolen from another car on Ocean View Road during the same time, according to police.

In the early morning hours of Oct. 10, someone stole a Nintendo video game system valued at $300 from a 38-year-old man’s car parked on Acron Path, according to police documentation. Officers noted in the report that car break-ins were an ongoing issue in the area, and that they were stationing extra patrols in the neighborhood.

With a rash of car break-ins police are urging residents to lock their cars, roll up windows, set car alarms and remove all valuable items. They are also asking the public to contact police if they witness anything suspicious.
