Last week, Westhampton Beach firefighters trained to battle a car fire behind the firehouse on Sunset Avenue.

During the training, firefighters set a junked car, minus the gas tank, on fire using straw.

As soon as it burst into flames, the volunteers responded with an engine, laid out a hose, connected to a fire hydrant and blasted the car with a stream of water. Other firefighters pried up the hood and trunk lid using the Halligan and other tools and doused the flames with water and foam.

Around this same time last summer, Westhampton Beach firefighters put out a car fire on Sunrise Highway in which a gas tank blew. It took them about 7 minutes to put that fire out.
