James Kiernan, a sergeant with the , was promoted to Lieutenant during Tuesday afternoon's Southampton Town Board meeting.
Kiernan was given the oath of office by Town Clerk Sundy Schermeyer with family standing beside him.
Of his promotion, Southampton Town Board member Nancy Graboski said Kiernan represents "Southampton's finest."
Lt. Robert Pierce said Kiernan is a 14-year member of the police department and is charge of the department's street crime unit.
"He is a well-educated man," Pierce said.
