Incident Reports: Scammer Told Man He Is Wanted on Drug Warrant

Also reported to Southampton Town police, man says he was attacked with meat clever.

Crimes and suspicious incidents recently reported to the Southampton Town Police Department:

Attempted Grand Larceny

• A Flanders man called police immediately June 24 after he received a phone call from a person trying to scam him out of $4,000. The man told police that the call came to his house phone, and the caller said he was a special agent calling to inform him that there is an arrest warrant out for him regarding smuggling drugs into the Dominican Republican in 2007. The caller said the man could vacate the warrant if he paid the $4,000, according to the incident report.

Larceny

• A Westhampton man told police June 26 that a red Specialized Allez bicycle valued at $2,000 was stolen from his property between 7:05 and 7:45 p.m. He said the bicycle was resting against a basketball hoop post on the east side of his property.

• A worker from Mastic said that while his unlocked trailer was parked in Remsenburg n Wood Cock Lane someone took a white and orange chainsaw, an orange chainsaw and a brush trimmer. The equipment had a total estimated value of $3,100.

• An East Quogue man told police June 28 that sometime since June 26 someone stole five copper driveway lights valued over $1,000 plus two or three plants from his property. His security company will retrieve surveillance video, the incident report states.

Criminal Mischief

• An East Quogue man told police June 27 that someone wrote "F— you," "U suck ass," and "deuche bag" on his garage door and front door molding with a black marker.

• A Westhampton woman reported June 28 that someone cut a hole in a wire fence at her property, removed the screen from a window on the guets house and trued to pry open a window, causing damange.

Identity Theft

• A Westhampton man told police June 24 that he received a letter from the state Department of Labor stating that someone tried to use his identity to apply for unemployment benefits. All of his personal information was correct on the form, except for the address, he said. He told police he does not know who could have all his personal information. He contacted the Department of Labor and canceled the application

Burglary

• A Flanders homeowner told police June 28 that sometime since June 21 someone broke into the basement of an unoccupied house that he has had on the market for sale for a year and a half. He said he discovered that copper piping that had been attached to the water heating unit was removed.

Menacing, Criminal Mischief

• A Riverhead man told police that on June 30 at 7:35 p.m. a man came at him with a meat cleaver on Albany Avenue in Flanders. The victim drove away, but the assailant threw the meat clever and hit the driver's side door of the victim's vehicle, according to the incident report.
