Incident Reports: Business Owner Says Bookkeeper Embezzled Money

Also this week, reports of identity theft.

Crimes and suspicious incidents recently reported to the Southampton Town Police Department west of the Shinnecock Canal.

Burglary

• A Westhampton resident told police on May 21 that someone entered his home and stole an iPad, valued at $600 and two jewelry boxes with various items in them. Police are investigating.

Grand Larceny

• A Hampton Bays business owner told police on May 21 that his bookkeeper has been embezzling money from his Captial One account for the past three years. Approximately $15,000 has been taken he said. He further reported that he has since fired the bookkeeper. Police are investigating.

•  A Hampton Bays resident said he was scammed out of $1,990 after he sent money through Western Union for the purchase of a car he saw on Craigslist. Police are investigating.

• A Flanders resident reported to police on May 8 that someone withdrew $1,476 from his Chase Bank account. The withdrawal was noted as a “foreign exchange.”  Police are investigating.

• A Flanders resident told police on May 20 that he was almost the victim of a work from home scam. A caller told him to mail a check for $1,400 to make $1,890. When the caller attempted to cash the check, however, the bank, Capital One in Hampton Bays, recognized it was a scam and did not cash the check.

Harassment

•  On May 21, police took a report from a Westhampton man who said that while working at Club Dream in Hampton Bays, the owner verbally threatened him. The man is seeking an order of protection.

Petty Larceny

• A Quogue resident reported to police on May 23 that someone entered his backyard and stole a BBQ valued at $1,000. Police are investigating.
Criminal Mischief

•  A Hampton Bays man told police on May 27 that someone slashed the right front tire of his car, which was parked on Peninsula Road.  

•  An East Quogue resident said that someone damaged the windows on his home with a BB Gun on May 27.

Burglary

•  A Westhampton man told police that sometime during the winter, someone broke into his garage and stole a motor scooter, valued at $500.

•  A Hampton Bays man told police on May 21 that someone entered his home and stole $94 in cash as well as a Visa card, which he said he has cancelled.

•  A Flanders resident told police on May 25, that when she took her dog for a walk around the block someone entered her home took her iPhone, valued at $200.

Trespass

•  A Hampton Bays woman told police that sometime between May 11 and May 21 someone removed two trees from her property. The trees removed were scrub oaks, according to the police report.

Identity Theft

• A Flanders resident told police on May 21 that she was the victim of a phone scam in which a man called her and told her that she won the lottery, but needed to purchase a Walmart gift card and send it to the caller. She sent the card, valued at $305, but never received the $2.5 million she was promised.
