One Airlifted in Wednesday Evening Crash

Crash tied up traffic on Old Riverhead Road until 7 p.m. on Wednesday night.

A head-on crash injured three people on Wednesday and sent one person to the hospital via helicopter, according to the Westhampton Beach Police.

The crash, between a Ford work van and a Volvo, occurred near Rogers Avenue Extension, forcing the closure of a portion of Old Riverhead Road for two hours. The Volvo was driving northbound on Old Riverhead Road when it crossed over to the southbound lane and collided with the van, police said.

Police said the Volvo driver sustained serious injuries and was subsequently airlifted to Stony Brook University Medical Center. The passenger in the Volvo was transported to Brookhaven Hospital via Westhampton War Memorial Ambulance with non-life threatening injuries, and the driver of the van was transported to Peconic Bay Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries.
