Hampton Bays Woman Dies After Calverton Crash Tuesday

The accident occurred on Tuesday morning at the Edwards Avenue exit on the Long Island Expressway, police said.

Update: 9:55 p.m. A Hampton Bays woman has died following a Tuesday morning crash on the Long Island Expressway and County Road 24 in Calverton.

According to Suffolk County Police Seventh Squad Detectives, who are investigating the two-car accident, Marilyn Mallon, 82, was driving her 1998 Honda eastbound on the off ramp of the Long Island Expressway at 10:15 a.m. when she entered the intersection and collided with a 1998 GMC traveling southbound on County Road 24.

Mallon, who also has a home in Flushing, was transported to Peconic Bay Medical Center where she died from her injuries.

The driver of the GMC, Tyler Yaskanich, 18, of Shoreham, suffered minor injuries.

According to Hampton Bays resident Joanne Lee, Mallon was very active in the St. Rosalie's congregation and with the Irish-American Society.

"She was a wonderful, bright, funny woman," Lee said, adding that Mallon divided her time between Hampton Bays and Flushing. "She had many friends in the Hampton Bays community."

Both vehicles were impounded for safety checks.

Original story: A two-car accident at Exit 71 on the Long Island Expressway on Tuesday morning left at least one driver injured, Suffolk County police said.

According to police, an accident occurred Tuesday at 10:17 a.m. when a female driver was navigating the Edwards Avenue exit and failed to stop. Her car was struck by another vehicle, police said.

The female driver was taken to Peconic Bay Medical Center for treatment of what "appears to be non-life-threatening injuries," according to the Suffolk County Police's public information office.
