Updated: Downed Wire Sets Fence on Fire in Hampton Bays

Police say Springville Road has been reopened.

Springville Road in Hampton Bays was shut down for a period of time on Wednesday evening after a transformer blew, sending a live wire into a fence and setting it on fire, according to Sgt. Ficurilli, of the Southampton Town Police Department 

Earlier reports indicated that the wire had set a car on fire, as well as a residence. Sgt. Ficurilli said the department received a number of 911 calls of that nature. 

"Some people said a car was on fire," said Sgt. Ficurilli.

The roadway was reopened after workers from the Long Island Power Authority secured the downed wire.
