Updated: Downed Wire Sets Fence on Fire in Hampton Bays

Police say Springville Road has been reopened.

Springville Road in Hampton Bays was shut down for a period of time on Wednesday evening after a transformer blew, sending a live wire into a fence and setting it on fire, according to Sgt. Ficurilli, of the Southampton Town Police Department

Earlier reports indicated that the wire had set a car on fire, as well as a residence. Sgt. Ficurilli said the department received a number of 911 calls of that nature.

"Some people said a car was on fire," said Sgt. Ficurilli.

The roadway was reopened after workers from the Long Island Power Authority secured the downed wire.

The was also on scene.

This was my neighbor Maria, we got her out of the house, a power line was hit by lightening and fell on her metal and wood fence, the fence burned because of the metal chicken wire attached to it, it did not burn her car or house, I kept getting shocked trying to get to her as well as her, the electric current was shocking my feet because of the water as well as Marias hands touching the door knobs, it was crazy, but all was ok, and Lipa did an awesome job getting service restored in record time.....Tim Bennett Hampton Bays
