Hampton Bays Fire Diverts E. Montauk Highway Traffic

House fire quickly extinguished, but road closed as firefighters make sure it won't reignite

Traffic on East Montauk Highway in Hampton Bays was diverted for more than a half hour Thursday night as firefighters responded to a house fire.

The fire was reported shortly before 9 p.m. at 204 E. Montauk Highway, and as fire trucks and police vehicles filled the road, fire police sent to Gravel Hill Road, Old Riverhead Road, and other cross streets.

Fire damage was not visible from outside the house, but firefighters were still going in and out.

Southampton Town and New York State police also responded, and East Quogue Fire Department send a crew to standby at Hampton Bays' headquarters.

Other departments were called to send in mutual aid, but the fire was knocked down within minutes and the call was canceled.
