Hampton Bays Diner Employees Fight off Fellow Worker

Maurilio Ramires-Ortiz, 23, of Hampton Bays was charged with attempted assault, a felony, on June 5 after police say he attacked a fellow employee at the with a kitchen knife.

Police said that at around 4 a.m. Ramires-Ortiz picked up a kitchen knife and started waving it around. A fellow employee picked up a garbage can lid to block the knife when Ramires-Ortiz attacked and pierced the garbage can lid with the knife.  Employees then subdued Ramires-Ortiz, who police said was intoxicated.

Police said employees held Ramires-Ortiz until police arrived.

In addition to attempted assault, Ramires-Ortiz was charged with criminal possession of a weapon in the fourth degree and menacing in the second degree, both misdemeanors.

Update: Ramires-Ortiz was arraigned Monday morning and is being held at the Suffolk County Jail in Riverside in lieu of $7,000 cash bail. Police said he also had an outstanding Immigration and Customs Enforcement warrant against him.
