Fire Marshal: Two injured in Westhampton House Fire

The fire at 7 Lincoln Street is still under investigation.

A house fire that broke out on Tuesday night in Westhampton sent two to the hospital, according to the Southampton Fire Marshal's office.

The fire, Fire Marshal John Rankin, said started in a home at 7 Lincoln Street at about 9:30 p.m. and when the Westhampton Beach Fire Department arrived, Westhampton Beach Fire Department Chip Bancroft  said flames were coming out the back, front and sides of the home.

Bancroft was first on scene along with Bill Dalton, third assistant chief, who Bancroft  said helped one man out the front door of the burning house and then went back to pluck another who he carried down the driveway. Moments later, Bancroft  said, another man threw a dresser out the window and then jumped to safety.

Unsure how many people were still in the house, Bancroft  aid he set up search teams, while another team worked to get the fire under control.

Despite difficulty with the fire because of the location of the house — which sits on a flag lot — Bancroft  said the department was able to get the fire under control within three minutes."

The department, however, was on scene for several hours, Bancroft  said because there was a lot of overhaul work.

"It was a good hit. They team did an awesome job," he said.

Two of the home's occupants were taken to the hospital, said Rankin, who is still in the process of determining how many people were in the house when the fire started.

Volunteers firefighters did not find anyone in the house during their search during and after the fire.

"We know there were at least 6 people in the house, but there could have been more. There is a language barrier and we are still trying to get information," said Rankin.

Rankin said his office has determined that the fire is not suspicious, but is continuing to investigate..

Also responding the fire for mutual aid was the Eastport Fire Department, the Quogue Fire Department and the Air National Guard. Numerous ambulances were also on scene, as Rankin said it was first reported that several individuals were injured in the fire.

Among those ambulances responding were the Westhampton War Memorial Ambulance, Flanders and East Quogue.
