East Hampton Man Killed in Wrong-Way Sunrise Crash on New Year's Eve

James Riley died after driving the wrong-way on Sunrise Highway; He allegedly hit an East Hampton family driving east.

Those who were involved in on New Year's Eve in Westhampton have all been identified as East Hampton residents, according to a report from 27East.

New York State police said James Riley, 60, died after he drove his 1996 Oldsmobile west in the eastbound lanes of Sunrise Highway for several miles before colliding with a 2000 Suzuki near Exit 63.

A family from East Hampton, Carlos Bunay, 39, Blanca Tenesaci, 38, and Joselyn Tenesaci, 9, were injured just after 7 p.m. when their Suzuki flipped.

The had to extricate Bunay from the car. He was airlifted to Stony Brook University Hospital. Blanca was also airlifted and Joselyn was taken by ambulance.

Sunrise Highway near Exit 63 was closed to traffic for two hours after the accident.

Steven Collins, an investigator with the New York State Police, told 27East that the investigation is continuing into whether alcohol or drugs were involved.

I was returning from up island shortly after this accident took place. The east side lanes were open. I drove past the rescue operations. You don't see accidents like this too often, thank goodness. It was quite the scare.
