DWI Arrest Made in Head-On Collision

Southampton Police arrested a 30-year-old from Riverside in connection with a devastating accident Friday night.

A 30-year-old Riverside man has been charged with DWI in connection to a head-on crash near Canoe Place Inn on Friday night.

Southampton Police say Marvin Cardona-Lopez was arrested after he allegedly crashed a 1995 Ford Explorer into a tree removal company truck that was carrying mattresses in the bed.

Police said Cardona-Lopez was heading westbound around 7:45 p.m on Montauk Highway when he and the truck, which was in the eastbound lane, collided. Both cars came to a rest in the eastbound lane.

The front-ends of both cars were completely crushed and police reported that five people were taken to area hospitals. One person was taken by a helicopter to Stony Brook University Medical Center.

It is unclear if another accident, which was reported near Edgewater Restaurant further east on Montauk Highway was related. One of the cars involved was reported as being in the middle of the road, while another had reportedly left the scene, according to police chatter on Friday night.
