Crimes Nearby: School Busses Vandalized; Teens Charged

RIVERHEAD

•  Over 40 Riverhead school buses were broken into and vandalized on Thursday night. According to Riverhead School Superintendent Nancy Carney, several individuals broke into the buses and allegedly discharged fire extinguishers, painted graffiti, and damaged electrical and mechanical systems. Riverhead Town police responded to the report of multiple criminal mischiefs and larcenies and arrested Terrance Pertillar, 19, of Riverhead and a 17 year old male from Riverhead. Later on Friday, Sergio Gonzalez, 18, of Riverhead, was also arrested. All were charged with criminal mischief in the second degree, criminal trespass, and petit larceny.

• Southampton Town police and Suffolk County Crime Stoppers are investigating an alleged incident of reckless endangerment on Sunday during which someone threw a brick through a moving vehicle in Riverside, injuring a passenger inside. Police are searching for a suspect, described as a "younger white male, with short blond hair." On Sunday, at approximately 3:45 pm, police say a 2011 Toyota Camry was heading northbound on Lake Avenue in Riverside. A passenger in a vehicle heading in the other direction allegedly leaned out the open window and threw a piece of brick or concrete at the Camry, hitting the windshield and shattering the glass on the passenger's side. The female passenger in the Camry was injured and taken to Peconic Bay Medical Center for treatment, police say.

• Desmond J. Bright, 31, of Flanders, was arrested June 7 at 9:10 a.m. in Riverside and charged with criminal impersonation in the second degree and aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle in the second degree, both misdemeanors, as well as being an unlicensed driver and littering, both violations. Police said Bright was pulled over for throwing garbage out the window while driving on Route 24 and misidentified himself to an officer.

EAST HAMPTON

•  arrested the former assistant manager at for allegedly stealing $6,300 from a safe and $1,000 from the ATM.
Robert G. Wooding, 24, of East Hampton, was charged with third-degree grand larceny, a felony, on June 6. According to his arrest report, he admitted to stealing the money.

• A man called police to Sandra Road in Springs when he noticed his neighbor's Ford F150 pick-up truck had been broken into on June 5 at about 8:50 p.m. The door was ajar and police said it looked as if someone tampered with the ignition in an attempt to start it.

SOUTHAMPTON

• After a customer paid for his groceries then forgot his wallet at the checkout counter, a cashier at the in Bridgehampton decided to help herself to it, according to Southampton Town police.  Police said 43-year-old Christine Lenowicz turned herself in at in Hampton Bays on Friday and was charged with grand larceny in the fourth degree, a felony. Detectives connected Lenowicz to the theft using store video surveillance footage, according to police.

• Benjamin Soleimani, 69, of Manhattan, was arrested June 9 at 10:36 p.m. in Bridgehampton and charged with DWI, a misdemeanor, as well as traffic infractions. Southampton Town police said Soleimani was tailgating on Ocean Road, passing in a no passing zone and driving 80 miles per hour in a 35-mile-per-hour zone. Police said Soleimani had the odor of an alcoholic beverage on his breath and slurred speech, and was unsteady on his feet. He also performed poorly on sobriety tests according to police and was arrested and transferred to police headquarters in Hamptons Bays for processing.

• Craig M. Callahan, 37, of Ocean City, N.J., was arrested June 7 at 1:36 a.m. on Main Street in Sag Harbor and charged with aggravated DWI, a misdemeanor. Sag Harbor police said Callahan was pulled over for making an illegal U-turn and failing to signal while making two turns. According to the arrest report, his breath smelled strongly of an "intoxicating beverage," his eyes were watery and bloodshot and he was unsteady on foot and performed poorly on sobriety tests. He also consented to a chemical blood alcohol content test, police said. he was held for morning arraignment.

NORTH FORK

• Gerald Leskody, 50, of Cutchogue, was charged with aggravated driving while intoxicated on June 7 at 1:27 p.m. after police stopped him for a traffic violation on Mill Lane in Mattituck. He was found to be intoxicated and a computer check revealed that his driver’s license was suspended pending prosecution for a prior DWI, police said. Leskody was arrested and transported to Southold Police headquarters in Peconic where he was processed and held overnight for arraignment.

• Jason Slutsky, 30, of Seaford was charged with DWI on June 7 at 5:18 p.m. after he was involved in a car accident at the intersection of Route 25 and Indian Neck Lane in Peconic, police said. Slutsky was driving a 2012 Mitsubishi east on Route 25 when the vehicle left the roadway into a wooded area at the intersection and collided with several trees. Slutsky was not injured but passenger Diana Burgos, 47, of Valley Stream was treated by Southold Fire Department Rescue Squad for her injuries and transported to Eastern Long Island Hospital. Slutsky was found to be intoxicated, was arrested and transported to police headquarters in Peconic where he was processed and held for arraignment.
