Cops: Teen Stole iPod, Meds, and Marijauna

An 18-year-old boy tried to hide after police set up a perimeter and brought out a search dog after thefts from vehicles in Hampton Bays on Christmas Eve.

The following information was supplied by the Southampton Town Police Department. A criminal charge is only an accusation and does not indicate guilt.

• An 18-year-old Hampton Bays High School student was picked up on theft charges near where police said several larcenies from cars occurred on Stuart Court in Hampton Bays on Christmas Eve around 10 p.m.

Police had received a 911 call from a resident who said someone had been rummaging through several vehicles that were parked in a driveway during a party. After being confronted by a resident, the teen fled on foot.

"Arriving officers set up a perimeter to contain the subject and called for K-9 assistance," police said. The Suffolk County Sheriff’s K-9 unit responded, while trying to track the thief, police received another 911 call from an area resident saying there was someone in their back yard.

Officers responded to the house, and located the young man, whom they said matched the description provided by the original caller. He took off running, and they caught up to him after a brief foot pursuit. They said he had stolen property in his possession, including prescription medication, an iPod, cash, and marijuana.

He was charged with four misdemeanors; petty larceny, criminal possession of a controlled substance in the seventh degree, fifth-degree criminal possession of stolen property, and obstruction of governmental administration. He was also charged with unlawful possession of marijuana, a violation. He was released on an appearance ticket.

Patch withheld the name of the teen because he was charged with non-drunken driving related misdemeanors.
