Cops: Someone Lit A Dumpster On Fire And Fled

Also, a boat docked at Indian Cove Marian is looted, thousands in valuables stolen from vessel.

Southampton Town police released the following incident reports for the week of Nov. 11.

Westhampton

  • Police are investigating a suspicious dumpster fire that Westhampton Beach Fire Department extinguished on Nov. 9 at around 1:15 a.m. According to police a  passing motorist near South Road noticed the flames pouring out of the dumpster, which was set back about 20 feet from the street. Police said the fire department informed them that another suspicious blaze was set to a pile of leaves a few hours earlier about a mile away from the dumpster fire. The fire marshal was called to the scene and police are investigating the arson incident.

Eastport

  • Police were contacted for the attempted identity theft of a woman’s credit card information after she had left her pocketbook in a restaurant on Nov. 8. According to police the woman had left her purse at Trumpets, located on Bay Avenue South after having a meal there. She returned the next day at around 1 p.m. to get her pocketbook and discovered that nothing had been taken. However, on the way home the woman stopped at a gas station to purchase fuel and her credit card had been frozen due to a fraud alert. When she got home she learned that someone had attempted to purchase $1,300 in merchandise from a Bloomingdales in California. The charges were canceled prior to any money being taken. The woman was advised by police to contact the credit agency, and no further action is being taken at this time.

Hampton Bays

  • A man called 911 on Nov. 7 to report that a Rolex watch had been delivered to his home in Hampton Bays via Fed Ex that he did not order. According to police the man received the package around 3 p.m. containing the watch, valued at around $5,000, which was purchased in California. Police are investigating the potential identity theft.
  • Someone broke into a boat that was docked at the Indian Cove Marina and stole numerous amounts of fishing equipment sometime between Halloween and Nov. 5. According to police the owner of the 1989 Duffy vessel called 911 on Nov. 5 to report the theft of the equipment, which he said valued in the thousands. Police said two poles with electronic reels were discovered in the water near the boat. No other vessels docked nearby reported having been broken into and police are investigating the incident. The victim was instructed to forward a stolen items inventory sheet with pictures as there were too many items missing to list on the incident report.

Flanders

  • Someone went into a woman’s vehicle on Meadowbrook Lane in Flanders Nov. 8 and stole about $780 worth of valuables. According to police the woman called 911 at around 4:30 p.m. to report that sometime between Nov. 7 and 8, an unknown subject opened the door of her unlocked 2005 Chevy Trailblazer and stole a jewelry board valued at around $80 and sterling silver and assorted costume jewelry worth around $700. The complainant also said whoever committed the crime broke the center console arm rest on the vehicle. Police are investigating the incident.

Riverhead

  • An employee at Suffolk Community College’s Eastern Campus on Speonk-Riverhead Road called 911 on Nov. 5 to report that someone had broken into his car, which was parked in the student lot. According to police the man called shortly after 6 p.m. after he discovered that someone had gone into his 2005 Saturn, parked in front of the Peconic Building and stole a check book from Teacher’s Federal Credit Union, a Chase credit card and a Garmin GPS system, valued at around $90. The employee has since canceled the credit card before any fraudulent charges were made, according to police. Police have no further leads or suspects at this time and the investigation is ongoing.
