Cops: Man Struggled With Burglar Who Invaded Westhampton Home

Also, a dispute over the use of a cellphone turns violent, according to police.

The following police incidents were reported this week by the Southampton Town Police Department west of the Shinnecock Canal.

Westhampton

  • A resident on Stewart Avenue was robbed in his home by someone he knew in the late evening hours of Sept. 9. According to police the victim was sleeping in his bed at around 11 p.m. when the thief entered his home and stole somewhere in the vicinity of $1,000 from his shorts. The victim woke up and confronted the robber, who punched him in the face and grappled with him in the bedroom. The suspect eventually fled the home in an unknown direction with the money. Police responded and the case is still being investigated.
  • A pool maintenance technician called police on Sept. 12 at around 8 a.m. to report that sometime between Sept. 8 and 9, someone stole a $1,900 hammerhead pool vacuum that was attached to the trailer of his truck while it was parked on Lakeside Lane.
East Quogue
  • A man called police on Sept. 9 to report that someone had broken into his father’s home on Shinnecock Road and stole $4,500 worth of home appliances. According to the report, the burglar entered the house through an unlocked garage door and stole a hotwater tank, a furnace and a fireplace insert. The man said his father noticed the items were missing on Sept. 1 and asked his son to come out to Southampton Town from his home in East Meadow to make the report.
Speonk
  • Someone broke into a person’s Montauk Highway apartment on Sept. 10 by breaking a screen and entering through the unlocked window. The call came in the following day at around 4 p.m. The victim reported the following missing; a college ring from New York Institute of Technology worth $629, a stainless Boliva watch worth $200 and a gold bracelet valued at $50.

  • A dispute over a cellphone turned violent on Ponquogue Avenue on Sept. 15. A woman, who went to police headquarters at 1 p.m., reported that another woman had punched her in the face, just above the left eye after the two got into an argument over her use of the phone. She did not wish to press charges, but wanted the incident documented.
  • Someone broke into a home on Dogwood Road sometime between Sept. 8 and Sept. 13 and stole about $8,000 in valuables. Police were called to the home on Sept. 13. According to the report, the thief smashed the window on a side door and also broke a garage door window to access that space. Stolen was a Litespeed bicycle valued at $5,000, a flat screen TV worth $1,800, an Apple computer valued at $1,200 and cruiser bicycles of an unknown value.
  • Someone used a phony $100 bill at the Ming Garden chinese restaurant on Montauk Highway on Sept. 10. Someone bought two sodas for $3.70 and got back $96.30 in change before he left. Police were called at around noon, after the counterfeit bill failed the “tear test.”
  • Someone broke into a man’s home on North Road on Sept. 7 and stole more than $1,000 in valuables. The victim said the burglar entered through a window and took a 46-inch Samsung Smart TV, valued at $911, and a Sony Playstation 3, worth about $200.
  • Someone broke into a home on East Tiana Road at some point between Sept. 8 and Sept. 11 by forcing a window off its hinges and removing it from the frame. The burglar stole an iMac computer, worth $3,000.

Riverside

  • Someone broke into a tow truck and stole $1,400 worth of equipment on Sep. 11. Police responded to the 911 call from an employee at Certified Automotive Towing on Old Quogue Road who stated that at some point between 6 p.m and 6 a.m. someone entered the property and stole a tow dolly, cross bars and a black bar from his 2006 Ford truck.
  • A woman called police on Sept. 14  at around 10 a.m. to report that someone had gone into her unlocked 2002 Honda CR-V and stole her GPS and a folding knife of undetermined value while it was parked on Lake Avenue.

Flanders

  • A woman called police on Sept. 11 to report that sometime between Sept. 8 and 10 someone came onto her property on Long Neck Boulevard and stole a white, rusted 48-inch wagon wheel. She told police she had held a yard sale on Sept. 8 and was selling the stolen wheel, but nobody had purchased it.
  • Someone broke into a 2008 Honda, parked in a driveway, on Brookhaven Avenue and stole a bag of clothes containing four T-shirts and a bathing suit worth about $25. The incident occurred between 10 p.m. on Sept. 11 and 8 a.m. on Sept. 12. Police searched the area but did not find any suspects.
  • A woman walked into Southampton Town Police Department headquarters on Sept. 9 to report that she was harassed, followed in her car and ultimately threatened on Route 24 at around 5:30 p.m. According to the woman, she was being followed by someone she knew close behind through several side streets in Flanders before she finally stopped her vehicle at the intersection of Route 24 and Donald Avenue. The woman said the suspect stopped her car behind her and got out, yelling and demanding that she get out of her vehicle as well. The woman drove off and reported the incident to police.
