Cops: Man Flipped Out At Buoy One Restaurant, Damaged Doors

Also, a rash of identity thefts and ATM frauds hit Hampton Bays area.

Southampton Town police released the following incident reports for the week of Nov. 4.

Westhampton

  • An irate customer at Buoy One restaurant on Montauk Highway has agreed to make restitution on damage he caused when he flew into a rage on Nov. 1. According to police, the owner of the restaurant called 911 at around 10:30 a.m. after a customer who had eaten at the establishment came back to argue a line item on his credit receipt. The owner said he reversed the errant charge, but the customer became unreasonable and began to slam things around before he stormed out. The owner locked the doors to keep the customer out of the restaurant, but the customer returned and in the process of trying to get back inside, destroyed the doors. The owner did not wish to see the customer arrested, but did want the customer to pay for the damages. No arrest was made in the incident.
Hampton Bays

  • Someone stole bank account information from a man in Hampton Bays on Oct. 28 and used it to withdraw $500 from ATMs on two separate occasions. According to police, they received a call from the victim at around 6:30 p.m. stating that one day earlier someone had withdrawn $500 from a Capitol One Bank in Mineola. He also said that another $500 was taken from an ATM in Forest Hills, Queens. The victim told police that he had the card on him at all times and that he didn’t know anyone who would have his PIN number. Since then the victim cancelled his card.
  • A victim of identity theft told police on Oct. 29 that someone had gained access to his debit card PIN number and used it to withdraw $1,000 plus a $3 surcharge from the ATM at the Citibank in Hampton Bays. Police advised the victim to contact the issuing bank, Bank of America, which the victim had already done to cancel his cards.
  • Employees at Bridgehampton National Bank on Montauk Highway called police on Oct. 31 to report that an unknown man placed an ATM skimming device on the ATM located at the bank. He then used the information to duplicate debit cards in order to make withdrawals from eight different accounts on Oct. 26. According to the complaint, the man made withdrawals totaling $4,500 from the location.
  • A Hampton Bays woman was the victim of identity theft on Oct. 28. According to police the woman called 911 on Oct. 30 to report that when she attempted to use her ATM card she was told that her card was blocked. When she contacted Capital One, the issuing bank, she was told the card was frozen because of a number of questionable ATM withdrawals. That’s when the woman discovered that someone had accessed her account and made five separate withdrawals totalling $1,175.95, including bank surcharges. The woman filed a fraud affidavit through Capital One and was advised to make a police report.
  • Someone broke into three locked construction trailers at a job site on North Road and made off with nearly $7,000 in construction tools and equipment sometime between Oct. 26 and Oct. 27. According to police, a representative of Cordel Development in Bridgehampton called police on Oct. 27, at around 8 a.m., to report the theft after they discovered the locks on the trailers had been cut and the equipment was missing. The company is in the process of building a home at the North Road site. Some of the stolen items include a Makita chop box, an aluminum scaffolding plank and an electric pump. According to the report, all of the tools have the word “Cordel” engraved on them.

Riverside

  • Police are investigating a violent incident at the County Center in Riverside after a client in drug treatment barged into a counselor’s office, tossed chairs and made threats on Oct. 29. According to police, they received a 911 call at around 9:30 a.m. from the clinic after the out-of-control client who visits the center for methadone treatment six times a week got in the counselor’s face and screamed, “I’m going to slit your throat and kill you.” By the time police arrived the suspect had left.
  • Someone stole a chainsaw worth about $200 from a work vehicle that was parked behind a church on Oct. 30. The victim told police at around 2:45 p.m. that he was with two others operating machinery near the front of Galilee Church on Old Quogue Road and didn’t witness the theft. The chainsaw was taken from the bed of a 2003 Dodge Ram pickup truck.

Flanders

  • A car accident on Flanders Road on Oct. 30 turned into violent threats according to one victim who called 911 to report the incident. The woman said she was driving her 2008 Ford on Flanders Road at around 3:30 p.m. when she collided with another vehicle. The two occupants inside that vehicle got out and began to threaten her, stating “I’m going to rip you apart. They’ll have to sew you up!” One of the unknown occupants then yelled “I’m going to slit your throat!” At the time, the victim is unsure if she wishes to press charges for harassment.
  • Police are investigating a burglary that took place on Maple Avenue on Oct. 28. A woman told police at around 3 p.m. that when she came home she noticed her front door was wide open. She went inside to figure out what happened and noticed valuables were missing from her upstairs bedroom. When police arrived they determined that the front door had been forced open. More than $2,900 in valuables were taken, including a recently purchased Samsung Galaxy Notebook, worth $545. Police were able to use the Galaxy Notebook’s internal GPS tracker to trace its location to a private road of County Road 104. Also stolen was $2,000 worth of assorted jewelry, a men’s silver watch, worth around $350, and gold and silver coins estimated at around $50.
