Cops: Drunk Driver Hits Dog, Leaves Scene

Dog is expected to survive, police say.

The following information was provided by Southampton Town Police. A criminal charge does not indicate a conviction, and defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty.

• A Hampton Bays woman was arrested on Saturday on DWI charges after police said she hit a dog while she was driving drunk on Neptune Avenue and proceeded to leave the scene of the accident.

According to police, 66-year-old Eileen Egan struck and injured a dog being walked by its owner around 4:20 p.m. She then allegedly left the scene of the accident, and was caught by police a short time later on Beth Lane.

Egan was arrested on a misdemeanor charge of aggravated DWI, as well as failing to maintain her lane of travel, driving without a seat belt, and leaving the scene of an accident, all misdemeanors. She was transported to police headquarters, processed and held for arraignment.

Police said the dog was transported to a nearby animal hospital for a leg injury but is expected to survive.

• Barbara Schneider, 49, of Hampton Bays, was arrested on misdemeanor DWI charges on Sunday shortly after 6 p.m. after police said she was in an accident on Montauk Highway while attempting to pull onto the road.

Police said Schneider was attempting to turn left, eastbound onto Montauk Highway, when her 2008 Dodge pickup collided with a 2011 BMW. Police said Schneider was found a short time later in a nearby parking lot attempting to exit her truck and was reportedly intoxicated.

She was transported to police headquarters, processed and held for arraignment.
