Cops: Car Stolen for Scrap Metal

Southampton Police charged a 51-year-old Riverhead man with two felonies for allegedly trading a stolen car for $471.

say they have charged a 51-year-old Riverhead man with two felonies after they said he allegedly stole a car and turned it in for scrap metal, making $471 off the deal.

Following an investigation of the theft of a 1992 Volvo from an East Quogue driveway, police learned that James Singleton allegedly removed the car with a black tow truck and brought the car to Gershow Recycling Center, of Medford, to trade for cash.

Police say the car was inoperable and had no plates when it was taken from a Walker Avenue residence.

Southampton detectives say they worked with Suffolk County Auto Squad to resolve the case.

Singleton was charged with filing a false instrument, a felony and criminal possession of stolen property, also a felony.
