New York State and Southampton Town police units were on the scene at TD Bank in Hampton Bays after a bank robbery was reported Monday afternoon shortly before closing.

Sgt. Michael Burns confirmed that a robbery was reported at the branch, located at 191 West Montauk Highway. It is believed it occurred between 4:30 and 5 p.m., though officials could not immediately provide any further information about a suspect.

State police were on the scene with a K-9 unit to search for the suspect and Southampton Town traffic control officers shut down E. Tiana Road heading southbound. The Montauk Highway entrance to the bank was also blocked off with traffic cones.

Police officers were observed inside the branch, which regularly closes at 5 p.m. on Mondays, dusting for fingerprints and interviewing employees.

Two employees interviewed on scene and one who picked up the phone declined to comment.

This is out of control a robbery a week since the welfare motel was forced on the people of Hampton bays. The brand new stop and shop looks like a ghetto. My sister in law lives on Bellows Pond Road and the character of the people who have been driving up and down the street has forced her to keep her children inside at all times. She used to love living there and now says it is full of what looks like criminals driving back and forth. A friend of my sister in laws husband who is a S.H. police officer believes they use the road to go back and fourth to Flanders looking to score drugs. I have seen the town lately and the character of the neighborhood has disintegrated to the state of scary. Thanks Tim Bishop for looking out for the wrong people.

that has been a transient welfare motel for 20 years. This is nothing new.The major influx started in Southampton etc. in 2001. I wonder , when they find the suspect, if he was from Hampton Bays. We shall see.
