Environment & Fair Trade

1-1/2 hr. presentation, Q&A about Organic Foods, with light refreshments, fair trade coffee, tea, etc. Raffle baskets and a prelude to our upcoming "Four Seasons Walking Tours". Fundraising Event

This will be a short blog about why Sobornost For The World Foundation will be emphasizing environmental issues during the year.  As you may know, our non-profit works in Africa, specifically Kenya and Zambia, where thousands of little kids without parents are trying to fend for themselves.  They get caught up in dark corners of cities and villages where they try to find just a couple of cents to buy fruit or a piece of bread.  Our Foundation has been working for ten years providing daily cooked food at the site where the children attend school and our programs pay for their school fees, uniforms, and books as well.  In addition to our orphan programs, we also operate a full Fair Trade retail called the World Village Fair Trade Market located in the Hamlet Green of Hampton Bays since 2003.  The Fair Trade movement has been steadily growing across Europe and America for over 20 years and one of its concerns, besides fair wages for workers, is Environmental Sustainability.  Often we are preoccupied with the "People" side of the Fair Trade movement and spend less time on the "Planet" side, but this year we wanted to spend more time on the "Planet" and how we are helping or hurting it.

This brings me to share with you our unique way of running our non-profit.  We will be hosting a fundraising event, "Organic Foods: Are They Better For You?" on Sunday, April 7th, from 2:00 PM-4:00 PM at Immaculate Conception Church (Auditorium) located at 580 Main St., Westhampton Beach, NY.  This event will be a fundraiser for our orphan programs with a suggested donation of $20 per person, and a few raffle baskets.  The talk is being presented by a great Environmental Activist-Teacher, Chris Visco, who spent 30 years organic gardening, teaching Environmental Science and having also worked as an Environmental Analyst.  Chris is an avid fisherman, hiker, environmental researcher and speaks with experience and knowledge about the Planet and all things Earth!  You won't want to miss his presentation because this will be the kick-off to his "Four Seasons Walking Tours" starting this Spring, also a fundraising event for our non-profit.  He'll explain all about Long Island's eco-systems, environmental landscapes, geological make-up, etc.  It will be a great way to get out there and walk when the weather warms up, while learning more about our own part of the planet - Long Island.
