What Do You Want To See Here? [Empty in Westhampton-Hampton Bays]

A new series, asking readers their thoughts on empty buildings along Montauk Highway.

While there are plenty of businesses thriving in the Westhampton-Hampton Bays area, there are more than a in the community, a testament to the hard times the area, and the country faces.

Over the next few months, Westhampton-Hampton Bays Patch is going to spotlight these vacant businesses to foster discussion in the community on what can, should and could be done to rehab these abandoned places.

This building sits on Montauk Highway in Hampton Bays and at one time was home to a club, known as The Cave.

What would you like to see built in this spot? And as a bonus question, can you guess the building's location and tell us about its history.

Feel free to log in and comment below and be sure to check back as we continue this series.

This blight has been vacant since I was a kid... I'm now 36! It needs to be razed! I say let the FD have some training and burn it down. I'd rather see a vacant field than this mess. The town should be ashamed for allowing this eyesore to remain for so long... I feel bad for the homeowners and businesses that surround it.

I agree with Ryan.

This building is where Son of Sam planned to make his last stand and was an under ground club back in the seventies. And yes, it should be razed-what an eyesore. Not only that I can't imagine that it's safe ,so what if kids get inside? How about building a park with basketball hoops?
Carole October 26, 2011 at 11:12 AM
That was once called The Cave.It was the Hotspot of the 70's.Located near the beginning of Hampton Bays at the end of EastQuogue. Between there and the Mad Hatter they were the places to be.

P Gaffney, I'm sure the kids have gotten in there already. I do like your idea of making some kind of park because right now, it's hideous!

Almost anything would be better than what is there!

God forbid that another mosque arises from the ashes. A park with a band shell sounds good..a little culture and live music would be a positive thing.
Tom October 26, 2011 at 12:26 PM
Yes, The Cave it was with dancing girls in the towers until the Town stopped that. I was thinking make it a big fish pond or swimming pool; seriously though, four affordable homes would be worth considering for this East Quogue location.

A small recreation center..senior adult/teen center ..park with a bandshell ...just get this eyesore outta here! I cannot believe that the landlord has not been taken to task about this.....who is the landlord anyway??

I seem to recall some legal wrangling between the town and the owner. That was years ago and not sure what the issue was.

An empty lot!

It has a big parking lot where a couple of houses could be built. Clean it up and reopen it as a club in the summer and rent out the houses to groups of young people from up the island and the city. The big parking lot wouldn't be needed because most customers will use a designated driver or take cabs. People will be put to work, the patrons can enjoy our beaches in the day and dance all night. They'll also be spending money in local stores and restaurants which will put more people to work.

Ryan, Gaffney, Carole and Tom are all right. The night club closed down during the early 90's and then tried to reopen but the Town claimed the use was abandoned and after several hearings with testimony from residents and Town officials the Zoning Board found the use was abandoned. I think the residents in the area would probably like to see anything but it's former use as a night club.

a new Apple store?

Tare down the abandoned buildings and replant trees and let mother nature take over.. Long Island is NOT the way it used to be and it is sad real sad... I miss being able to take a walk in the woods and just enjoy nature now you walk and there is nothing but building and shops everywhere.. I miss the way Long Island used to be and it should be torn down and replanted with Mother Nature taking over...

Sounds like a plan Leslie!

The former "Cave" nightclub located on Montauk Highway in East Quogue. Once again...defaced with graffiti and a breach in the outside siding located on the front facade of the building. This has sat abandoned and rotting for too long. It is my fear that a trespasser might light a fire intended for heat and this fire accidentally spread to engulf the entire building. In NYC, fires started by squatters for a heat source while seeking refuge in adbandoned buildings have tragically led to deaths of firefighters. I can remember working as a teenager in Hampton Bays, when Freedom shuttered it's doors. I am now 39. So I can estimate that this property has served no useful purpose for in excess of 20 years. I believe that the citizens of East Quogue have had to endure the "unsightliness" of this property for far too long. The town needs to begin to seek a LONG TERM solution to this property. While I know that the property has sought and received the approval to subdivide the property into smaller lots, the likelihood of new construction taking place at this location in the current economic environment is not optimistic. The community cannot afford to have this property continue to rot and fall in further disrepair.

Like Leslie's idea- mother nature, or Brad's - Apple store- or a senior center (with transportation for homebound seniors) also mentioned above. Senior center would be good if there is transportation-lacking in the area. No more houses!!! So many available already.

The good old days, The Cave, The Nite Club, Brendans, it went by many names but was the place to go along with the Mad Mad Hatter down the road for great rock back in the day. Rat Race Choir, The Good Rats, Zebra, Twisted Sister, etc. Lets do it again!
Margaret Sandoval June 29, 2012 at 10:07 PM
I knew it as Brendans in the early 70s. Along with the Mad Hatter and Boardy Barn, they were the places to go to. It made me a bit nervous being underground; I remember a fire in a club called Gullivers in Port Chester in 1974, and I always thought of that when I went to Brendons. Great memories though!
