Hampton Bays, Shelter Island Fire Chaplin Laid to Rest

A funeral was held for Father Dan Harris on Tuesday.

A funeral for the Rev. Daniel Harris, who passed away on Dec. 29 at the age of 69 after an illness, was held on Tuesday afternoon at , according to the Hampton Bays Fire Department Facebook page.

A post written by the Rev. John G. Fleischmann said that Father Harris served as a fire chaplain since 1973 for a number of fire companies, including The Weymouth Fire Department in Massachusetts, the Fire Chief’s Association of Massachusetts, the New England Fire Chief’s Association, and the Massachusetts Corps of Fire Chaplains.

He recently served as Chaplin of the Hampton Bays and Shelter Island fire departments and as the interim priest at Saint Mary's Church on Shelter Island.

Fleischmann said Harris was "no stranger to horrific fire scenes" and "even in his lowest moments, his concern was always for others."

That was especially true, wrote Fleishmann, when Harris' son, Joshua, who was adopted, died suddenly at the age of 22 in October.
