Pool & Home Water Safety
Water Safety at Home • Children should never be left unattended in or near a pool or any body of water (including a bath tub), NOT EVEN FOR A MINUTE. • Assign or designate a water watcher. • Teach children and caregivers how to swim and learn basic swim safety instructions. • If a child is missing, check the pool first. • Install 4-sided isolation fencing around the pool, not just the yard. • Use self-closing and self-latching gates, gate alarms, pool alarms, children’s personal alarms, door alarms & motion detecting devices. • Install child proof doors and locks 54” high on interior doors. • Remove or lift and lock above ground pool ladders. • Have rescue equipment on hand: Personal Flotation Devices (PFDs), Life Ring, Shepherds Hook. • Have a telephone and emergency action plan by the pool. • Safety covers on all spas and whirlpools. • Teach all caregivers Infant, Child/Adult CPR, First Aid and Water Rescue Techniques. • Check your yard for buckets or any standing water. • Keep tables, chairs and toys away from fencing so a child can not climb over. • Treat inflatable pools like a regular pool, empty and then turnover or deflate when not in use. • Remember landscape ponds can be a danger as well. • Clear pool of all balls and toys to deter children from entering the pool. Post and know CPR and pool safety rules. For more Water Safety tips visit www.LIDPTF.org
