Linda Kabot: Remarks From Civic Association Debate

WRITE-IN Candidate Linda Kabot's Opening Remarks at the Hampton Bays Civic Candidates Forum, Oct. 17, 2011

On October 17, I welcomed the invitation to participate at the hosted by the Hampton Bays Civic Association.   I am waging a for the position of Town Supervisor to provide voters with a choice because the Republican and Conservative parties failed to designate a challenger to Anna Throne-Holst  for the upcoming General Election on Tuesday, November 8. The forum also included a debate among the four contenders for the two Town Council seats:  Bridget Fleming, Brad Bender, William Hughes and Christine Scalera.

My allotted four minute opening remarks were as follows: “Thank you to the Hampton Bays Civic for this opportunity.  I am Linda Kabot and it would be my honor to serve you once again as Town Supervisor.  I am providing you with A REAL CHOICE and encouraging you to WRITE-IN my name for Supervisor.  Because it is too late for me to get my name on the ballot, I NEED YOU to print my name on your paper ballot by WRITE-IN at the bottom of the Supervisor’s Column, #15

Stand up for me, like I stood up for you – the taxpayers.  In her campaign ads and speeches, my opponent keeps quoting the Moody’s analysis on the Town’s bond rating which is from February 2010, just 6 weeks after she took office.  Moody’s was reflecting on the years 2008 and 2009 and the swift, effective leadership I provided to fix the financial mess, safeguard our credit rating, cut millions in Town spending and institute tighter controls.  The record reflects that I took responsibility in 2007, 2008, and 2009 to right the ship. She did NOT do the heavy-lifting.  I did, working with key Town administrators. The truth is that she was busy building coalitions and cozy relationships and endlessly criticizing me.  The truth is she is masterful at manipulating the facts. DON’T BUY INTO HER POLITICAL POSTURING CLAIMING I HAVE A REVISIONIST HISTORY. THE FACTS DO NOT LIE.

WHO CAN YOU TRUST to provide strong, independent leadership?

WHO CAN YOU TRUST to do the right thing?  Bring back a KNOWLEDGEABLE Supervisor who knows how to get things done and done right.

Bring back the fishing, clamming, yard-saling Town Supervisor who is a Hometown Girl.  RESTORE HONESTY, INTEGRITY AND CAPABILITY to the Supervisor’s Office.

WRITE-IN Linda Kabot for Supervisor to bring back COMPETENCE AND CIVILITY.

People know that I am hard-working and truly care about our community.

As a property owner and taxpayer, I can BETTER REPRESENT the interests of residents and taxpayers in OUR Town.

With respect to the specific issues raised by your organization, I agree more needs to be done.  What is going on with the Hampton Bays GEIS, why is it not completed?  What about the Local Waterfront Revitalization Plan that I reinitiated in 2008?  We need to update the zoning codes to address population density concerns, deal with motel / condo conversions, and so much more!

You know that I have been a leader over the years in closing zoning loopholes, working tirelessly to complete hamlet studies to update comprehensive plans and implementing more stringent requirements to protect community character and facilitate our local economy.  I will ensure proactive code enforcement because it is important to protect the quality of life in our neighborhoods, maintain our property values, and public safety.

If elected, I will work to address the environmental concerns you have raised with respect to the groundwater and surface water protection, the emergence of Red Tide, and the need to consider updated cesspool regulations in sensitive areas.

I am grateful for the support of so many people from all walks of life, from all political stripes, throughout our Town.   For me, it’s about service above self.  We need a person at the top who won’t do you wrong, won’t lie to you, mislead you, and get all wrapped in her ego.

I am proud to offer my strength of character, courage, and credentials to the voters to provide you with a CHOICE for the position of Supervisor.

On Election Day, please WRITE-IN Linda Kabot for Supervisor at the bottom of Column #15.

Let’s make history in the Town of Southampton!  Thank you.”
