A retrograde planet is a planet that appears to be going backwards from the viewpoint of those of us on earth. No planet can go backwards, but because of changes in the speeds of orbits the earth will pass another planet and see that planet in its rearview mirror meaning its behind earth. The planet goes direct when its orbit speeds up and it catch's up with the earth.
