How Yoga Helps Me Be a Better Mother
Kara Billingham, local yoga teacher and mom, sharing her personal experience of yoga and parenting and how they are connected for her.
I am a mother of 3 young children, the oldest 10, then 7, and 2. My full-time employers are these three of whom I feel privileged to have in my life.
Yoga came into my life as a saving grace to some sciatica troubles during my first pregnancy. It was then I began a daily practice of stretching with yoga and it was the only thing that helped with my bodily aches.
Now, a yoga instructor, the time I spend in my yoga practice reminds me of who I am as a person and who I want to be as a mother as well.

Today I spent time outdoors practicing on a towel by a pool. The air clear and fresh. The sky cloudy with pieces of blue and shining light breaking through. I was so inspired, I even took a quick pic of the space I was creating in my feet! Yes, I have little toes! (see pic)
I am so grateful to be a mother. I am grateful for my yoga practice. I take time to connect with the spiritual self within. I am more grounded. I bring that to the children and all those around me. Is it a perfect system? No. I take what I can get, when I can get it. I believe I am not alone in feeling I don't always get it right as a parent. But, for me, I know yoga helps. I choose to be grateful for that today.
