As a former "Hurricane," I am well aware of why Westhampton Beach named their sports teams The Hurricanes! The Hurricane of '38! With the impending storm creeping up the East Coast, we've all been telling stories of how the Country Club was used as a morgue and how the flooding came up to Main Street. It almost feels like Halloween - reading ghost stories and watching scary movies. Except this isn't Hollywood...it's The Hamptons. And it's real.
I'm not going to bore you with hurricane preparedness info. Instead I'm going to tell you how I remember spending the last few bouts of tropical weather in Westhampton Beach.
I believe it was Hurricane Floyd, which eventually ended up being a Tropical Storm by the time it hit Long Island. I was 20 and my best friend lived at the Morgan House on Potunk Lane. We never missed an excuse to have a party and a "hurricane party" ensued. The party consisted of about 12 friends and plenty of booze. ............
