Hard to believe but the development of the cruise missile began right here on Long Island in 1916.
Moreover, in 1918 a "Flying Torpedo" was tested on the Long Island Motor Parkway. As documented on VanderbiltCupRaces.com, "Lawrence Sperry... ingeniously modified a Marmon car, capable of reaching 80 mph, for use as a wind tunnel by mounting an Aerial Torpedo atop it and driving down a Long Island parkway."
