Role of Motor Pkwy. in Development of the Cruise Missile

Hard to believe, but the development of the cruise missile began right here on Long Island in 1916.

Hard to believe but the development of the cruise missile began right here on Long Island in 1916.

Moreover, in 1918 a "Flying Torpedo"  was tested on the Long Island Motor Parkway. As documented on VanderbiltCupRaces.com, "Lawrence Sperry... ingeniously modified a Marmon car, capable of reaching 80 mph, for use as a wind tunnel by mounting an Aerial Torpedo atop it and driving down a Long Island parkway."
