The Planned Long Island Motor Parkway from Lake Ronkonkoma to Riverhead

This post aboutVanderbiltCupRaces.com describes the original plan to end the Long Island Motor Parkway in Riverhead.

Today's post on VanderbiltCupRaces.com describes the original plan to end the Long Island Motor Parkway, America's first automobile highway, in Riverhead.

Rare news clippings, surveys and maps document the 1906 plan "for a straightaway road of 65 or more miles that will extend from Floral Park through the center of Long Island to Riverhead".

For the first time ever, a survey is posted that shows the planned Motor Parkway route through Riverhead ending at Old Country Road.

Also, check out the five automotive events being held on Long Island this weekend.

Enjoy,

I was told that there are some small patches of the original road still in place is that true?

Kenneth, there are remnants of the Motor Parkway (cement pavement, concrete posts, bridges and toll lodges) everwhere from Fresh Meadows to Lake Ronkonkoma: http://www.vanderbiltcupraces.com/motor_pkwy

Howard , I was looking at the photos, and on page 10 there is a photo of Henry Austin Clark Jr in a parade with his Funny car. My father had a shop on Jericho Turnpike in Floral park during the 30"s and early 40's and used to build these cars for people to use in parades. He called them Leaping Lennea's . I wonder if this was one of them.

Howard, I remember two sections of the original road. One was in Alley pond park and the other was going east from Willis Ave. ( I guess it is now the entrance road to the pool).
