The Society for the Preservation of Long Island Antiquities (SPLIA) has forwarded this marvelous photo from their archives of the 1904 Renault Vanderbilt Cup Racer.
As documented on VanderbiltCupRaces.com , the photo shows driver Maurice Bernin and his mechanician Felix Prossen preparing the 90-HP Renault for the 1904 Vanderbilt Cup Race. Bernin was the chauffeur for its owner W. Gould Brokaw. Great Neck resident Brokaw is considered a possible inspiration for F. Scott's Fitzgerald's Jay Gatsby.
Enjoy,
