Scouts Give Good Ground Cemetery Facelift With New Fence

All the veterans who are buried in the cementary will also get a new marker as part of Boy Scout Charlie Schneider's Eagle Scout project.

Driving past the Good Ground Cemetery on Montauk Highway in Hampton Bays, community members may have noticed the 131-year-old cemetery's fencing had deteriorated and was coming into disrepair, but one Hampton Bays scout has fixed that.

On Dec. 8, Hampton Bays Boy Scout Charlie Schneider from Troop 483, gathered his fellow scouts to replace the fence as part of his Eagle Scout project.

And while a new fence now surrounds the cemetery that is the final resting place of many of the hamlet's historical figures, Schneider has plans to do more.

Over the winter, Schneider will be working to catalog all of veterans who are buried in the cemetery and replace and add markers with anodized aluminum markers because many of the graves of veterans are only marked with a small plastic sign or nothing at all.

Schneider also plans to solar-powered light on the flag pole.

To fund his project, Schneider, who was honored in Oct. by the Suffolk County Legislature for saving a fellow scout's life over the summer, held a spaghetti dinner for the community in October.
